OBEDIENCE

Obedience training ranges from very basic training, such as teaching the dog to reliably respond to basic commands such as "sit", "down", "come", and "stay", to high level competition within clubs such as the AKC where additional commands, accuracy and performance are scored and judged.

Obedience implies compliance with the direction or command given by the handler. For a dog to be considered obedient rather than simply trained in obedience, it must respond reliably each time the command is given, by what is commonly known as its handler. A dog can go through Obedience training and not be obedient. If a dog is referred to as being Obedience Trained it should comply immediately with every command its handler gives. In the strictest sense an Obedience trained dog is an obedient dog. The relationship and trust between the dog and handler are important for success.

Obedience training builds a good foundation for other dog activities such as Agility, Canine Musical Freestyle and Therapy Dog work.

Obedience Training is one of the best things you can do for your dog or puppy... and especially for yourself. Obedience training doesn't solve all behavior problems, but it is the foundation for solving just about any problem. Training opens up a line of communication between you and your dog. Effective communication is necessary to instruct your dog about what you want her to do. With a few basics, you can teach your dog anything from 'stay' (don't bolt out the door) to 'sit' (don’t jump up on the visitors), to 'leave it' (don't chew the furniture).
Do you ever find yourself saying: I love my dog . . . but I can’t live with him? In this class, you will learn the basic fundamentals for training your dog to do just about anything you want. In class you will learn how to teach your dog to sit, lie down, come (which is quite valuable) and best of all how to walk nicely by your side and not pull you down the street. If you want to be able to get your dog to live by your standards, or just have some basic manners, then this is the class for you.

Please dress appropriately and wear comfortable shoes. Dogs should wear a buckle or training collar and please bring a 6-foot lead. Also, bring some good, soft treats to reward your dog during the class. This may be pieces of cheese, hotdogs or any other dog treats.
